Hope · running now, from live news sources

A program searches the news for the word hope, and reads aloud the sentence it is in.

It queries the news, finds an article containing the word, isolates the passage that holds it, and speaks that passage through text-to-speech. Then it goes back and finds another. It has no end state and no total; it works through the sources in real time, and the supply does not run out.

Nothing is composed. The program has no opinion about what it finds and no capacity to have one, and what accumulates over an hour of listening is not a statement about hope but the shape of the word's use — who is invoking it, over what, and in what tone of voice a machine reads a sentence it does not understand. It can run in any language.

The work needs no space and no installation. It runs for as long as it is left running. What plays above is not a recording: the sentences are fetched while you are on the page, and no two visits hear the same ones.
