A Shell of a House

2025

“An open system in which the breath of one organic body continues to exist inside the body of another — a body that is already gone.”

“The sensation is of a sensory greenhouse: a place where life still breathes inside what has already dried, crumbled and remained as nothing but a shell.”

On A Shell of a House · The Lab, Tel Aviv · curated by Sharon Toval

“While the political, diplomatic and military conceptions collapsed, the artists sensed and even foretold what was coming.”

“Sharon Azagi was one of the standout artists in the 2020 Bezalel MFA graduate exhibition — a show characterised throughout by a millennial celebration of embracing defeat, of we are the last generation.”

On Turbulence · Alfred Gallery, Tel Aviv

Hammer

2023

“A system detonates one charge every six heartbeats — turning the artist’s body, which built the structure with her own hands, into the agent of its destruction.”

“Azagi mapped out a set of interfaces between her own body and an architectural one. Near the Egyptian border she built a temporary structure the size of this interior space, and buried forty-five explosive charges between its blocks… A mutual feeding emerged between body and charges, between woman and machine: the more the explosions multiplied, the more agitated she became, her heartbeat quickened, the explosions grew more frequent, and so on. Calm might slow the rate of destruction, but cannot prevent it. The installation is a compressed summary of the fate of every body, building and civilisation: everything that rises is destined to wither and fall.”

Curatorial text on Hammer · Vital Signs, Haifa Museum of Art · published in Harama Magazine, Manofim

Her installation is called Hammer, and it would not embarrass any geek or professional demolition expert. The walls tremble, and the blocks shatter to the sound of Azagi’s pounding heartbeat.

Her systems are built with the potential for eternal life — they strive to function by themselves and for themselves, without human assistance.
